Notts II: Passages above Oliver Llyoyd Aven (Day 2); Dave Ramsay, Neil Pacey On the first trip (day 1) we placed a new rope (45m) and noticed a intresting sandy crawl going off from the rift at the top of the pitch. We rigged the pitch using the existing bolts for a traverse and placed two additional bolts at the top to make a ‘Y’ hang, also backed up to one of the original bolts. We used 10mm stainless steel … Read More
On Sunday spurred on by Thursday nights exploits ,Dave ,Richard and Bill returned to the most interesting extension to enlarge via capping and move forwards. Dave and Richard enjoyed surveying whilst Bill left to his own devices set about capping the rift. 3 holes drilled and loaded . First charge gave forth sparks , the second punctured a hole in Bills Left hand. Thought to be a consequence of recoil from the rod back firing and Bills vice like grip … Read More
I asked Rupert about this after my visit in 2001. He got as far as the “Pleasures of the Palm” and returned unimpressed. I think he was hoping for something without so much crawling. — In mmmmc@yahoogroups.co.uk, “dave ramsay” <daveramsay@k…> wrote: > According to Pete Hall, the aven was climbed originally by Rupert but I’m not sure what he did at the top. According to Pete Hall, the aven was climbed originally by Rupert but I’m not sure what he did at the top. Shortly after Notts II was opened to non divers Pete Hall climbed the aven using the rope left in by Rupert, no one else followed him. Because he was on his own and the others were waiting at the bottom of the aven Pete did not have much time at the top so he only went along the rift, … Read More
On Thursday 28th November, Neil, Dave and Bill visited the top of the aven. Neil and Dave surveyed while bill enlarged and inspected the new find. Bill was most interested in the extension. We surveyed only from the pitch head to the entrance to the extension, this was some of the most awkward surveying I have ever done as in most places the rift is too narrow to hold the compass and clino in a position where it was possible … Read More
Thursday 2nd December Neil and Dave surveyed the upstream passage of Oliver Lloyds Aven, now known as ‘On the Other Hand’. The passage is about 85m long with a 10m aven on the left after about 55m, this aven may continue upwards beyond a small constriction, three bolts required to reach the constriction and see what lies above. Just before the end of the passage, which would require misery pushing, is a small tube which carries a strong draught and … Read More
